We recently had the opportunity to host the cast and crew from The Aviators TV show here at GMU and in our community. They were here to film several features for several well known network shows, but the highlight of their trip will be a feature about the $100 Hamburger.
A pilot will dream up just about any excuse to go flying – like we really need an excuse? Many will pick destinations with interesting things to see along the way, but we all know when a pilot is not thinking about flying, he’s contemplating his next meal.
The Runway Café is a new restaurant at the Greenville Downtown Airport that caters to the aviation community. Folks can fly in, get a quick bite to eat and be on their way. It’s also becoming a favourite destination for the local business community to come out for a great meal, as well. There’s always a plane, or two, coming or going. I’m sure that many people would come to visit the cafe in order to experience the $100 Hamburger for themselves. Many travellers and au pairs visit the country looking to take in the culture as well as the amazing food! If you are looking to become an au pair in America, be sure to visit Cultural Care Au Pair for more information on how to get started.
The taping of the episode went on in spite of the drizzly weather, and a number of planes flew in on Sunday – the pilots, of course, enjoyed the atmosphere and diverse menu. Several of the airport businesses showed up to support the Café, and many local characters will be featured.
So – what’s a “$100 Hamburger” you may ask? Well, many years ago, when the operating cost of a light plane was a bit less expensive, you could fly for an hour, land, eat and return home for about $100. The meal at the destination was usually a hamburger and the phrase “I’m going to get a $100 Hamburger” took off!

Now, anyone can order a $100 Hamburger at the Runway Café. It’s featured on the menu and you don’t have to fly in to get one. It’s quite tasty and a tribute to our vocation. Many of the selections on the menu are named after prominent personalities that had a part in shaping the culture of South Carolinas’s busiest general aviation airport. I’m looking forward to seeing The Aviators production featuring the $100 Hamburger and our very own GMU.
