We were proud to host about 45 young ladies last week from The Girl Scouts of South Carolina to Mountains to Midlands chapter as they earned their Aerospace Badges.

Mad Science of the Upstate provided a workshop at the Runway Cafe where the girls learned about the science of flight and even constructed a paper plane they could fly & experiment with. In addition to making the plane, they made kites and launched model rockets.

The girls were given a tour of the Control Tower at GMU where a number of the operational aspects of a business airport and our national air traffic system were described. They saw the approach control radar and watched several planes take off and land.

A tour of our facility included a brief discussion of the history of aviation and how our industry has evolved over the years. They were also briefed on the tremendous value business aviation contributes to our economy and how individuals and businesses are able to leverage time by utilizing aircraft. They were shown several aircraft that were being maintained and were able to get a close look at one of our Cirrus SR22’s. We encouraged them to consider pursuing a career in the aviation industry and pointed out several of the many opportunities that will be available to them.

They returned to the Runway Cafe for lunch and airplane watching.

We are excited about opportunities to expose youngsters to the fun & excitement that aviation can provide, and we always try to explain the value that the aviation industry returns, as well. It was a great day!
